CONSTIPATION IN PREGNANCY
Constipation is common during pregnancy for a number of reasons:
Slower colon transit due to hormonal changes
Iron in prenatal vitamins
Increased tension in pelvic floor muscles
What can you do?
Increase your water intake! Aim for at least half of your body weight in fluid ounces of water.
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Focus on fruits containing water.
Take your time in the morning. Your bowels have a routine and a morning BM is best.
Talk to your doctor about adding a natural stool softener. Magnesium powder can be helpful and is generally considered safe during pregnancy ( I love Natural Calm ).
Don’t strain! Make sure your pelvic floor muscles are relaxed during bowel movements. A squatty potty (or any small stool under your feet) helps them to stay relaxed.
